Saddle Road (Route 200) is a 45 mile ‘shortcut’ across the Big Island of Hawaii that takes you over 2000m up between the peaks of two volcanoes. It’s got a reputation for being dangerous and we had to ask Avis for permission to drive it so when it started raining and getting dark halfway through the drive, I began to get slightly worried….
